Sunday before the Theophany of Our Lord

Sunday before the Theophany of Our Lord

When it falls between January 2 through January 4 inclusive

Troparion of the Forefeast, Tone 4.
Make ready, O Zabulon; and prepare thyself, O Nephthalim. O River Jordan, stay thy course and leap for joy at receiving the Master, Who cometh to be baptized. Rejoice, O Adam, together with our first mother, and hide not yourselves from Him as ye once did in paradise; because, seeing you naked, He hath appeared, to clothe you in your primal raiment. Christ hath appeared, wishing to renew all creation.

Glory. Now and ever.

Kontakion of the Forefeast, Tone 4.
To the melody of: Thou hast appeared.
In the streams of the Jordan today the Lord came to John and cried out: O Prophet, be not afraid to baptize Me; for I am come to save Adam, the first-formed man.

Prokeimenon, Tone 7. Psalm 27:9,1.
Save, O Lord, thy people: and bless Thine inheritance.
Verse: Unto Thee will I cry, O Lord: O my God, be not Thou silent to me.

The Lesson of the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to Timothy.
Timothy §298 (4:5-8).
My son Timothy: Be thou vigilant, labour in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy ministry. Be sober. For I am even now ready to be sacrificed: and the time of my dissolution is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord the just Judge will render to me in that day: and not only to me, but to them also that love His coming.

Alleluia, Tone 8. Psalm 66:2.
Alleluia.
Verse 1: Have mercy on us, O God, and bless us. Alleluia.
Verse 2: Let the light of Thy countenance shine upon us: and have mercy on us. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

The Lesson of the Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark.
Saint Mark §1 (1:1-8).
The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaias the prophet: Behold I send My angel before Thy face, who shall prepare the way before Thee. A voice of one crying in the desert: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight His paths. John was in the desert baptizing, and preaching the baptism of penance, unto remission of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all they of Jerusalem, and were baptized by him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and he ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying: There cometh after me one mightier than I, the latchet of Whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. I have baptized you with water; but He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

Communion. Psalm 148:1.
Praise ye the Lord from the heavens: praise ye Him in the high places. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Sunday before the Theophany of Our Lord

When it falls on January 5

Troparion of the Vigil, Tone 4.
The river Jordan once turned back before the mantle of Elisha, after Elias had been taken up into heaven; and the waters were divided on this side and on that. The way in the midst of the waters became dry for him, as an image of the true baptism whereby we pass over the shifting sea of this life. Christ hath appeared at the Jordan to sanctify the waters.

Glory. Now and ever.

Kontakion of the Vigil, Tone 2.
To the melody of: O Prophet of God.
To take away the sins of all in Thy loving kindness, because of the measureless multitude of Thy mercy, O Christ, Thou dost undertake to be baptized in the waters of the Jordan as a man, thus putting the garment of original glory back upon me who had been so wickedly stripped naked.

Prokeimenon, Tone 7. Psalm 27:9,1.
Save, O Lord, thy people: and bless Thine inheritance.
