Second Kathisma

Psalm 9

Unto the end, for the secrets of the son, the Psalm of David.

I will confess to thee, O Lord, with all my heart: I will tell all thy marvellous things. I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing to thy name, O most High. In turning mine enemy backward: they shall be weakened, and perish before thy face. Because thou hast done my judgement and my cause: thou hast sat upon the throne which judgest justice. Thou hast rebuked the Gentiles, and the impious hath perished: their name thou hast destroyed for ever, and for ever and ever. The swords of the enemy have failed unto the end: and their cities thou hast destroyed. Their memory hath perished with a sound: and our Lord abideth for ever. He hath prepared his throne in judgement and he will judge the whole world in equity, he will judge the people in justice. And our Lord is made a refuge for the poor: an helper in opportunities, in tribulation. And let them hope in thee that know thy name: because thou hast not forsaken them that seek thee, O Lord. Sing to our Lord, which dwelleth in Sion: declare his studies among the Gentiles. Because he requiring blood remembered them: he hath not forgotten the cry of the poor. Have mercy on me, O Lord: See my humiliation by my enemies. Which exaltest me from the gates of death, that I may declare all thy praises in the gates of the daughter of Sion. I will rejoice in thy salvation: the Gentiles are fastened in the destruction, which they made. In this snare, which they hid, is their foot taken. Our Lord shall be known doing judgements: the sinner is taken in the works of his own hands. Let sinners be turned into hell, all nations that forget God. Because to the end there shall not be oblivion of the poor man: the patience of the poor shall not perish in the end. Arise Lord, let not man be strengthened: Let the Gentiles be judged in thy sight. Appoint Lord a Law-giver over them; that the Gentiles may know that they be men. Why Lord hast thou departed far off, despisest in opportunities in tribulation? Whiles the impious is proud, the poor is set on fire: they are caught in the counsels which they devise. Because the sinner is praised in the desires of his soul and the unjust man is blessed. The sinner hath exasperated our Lord, according to the multitude of his wrath he shall not seek. There is no God in his sight: his ways are defiled at all time. Thy judgments are taken away from his face: he shall rule over all his enemies. For he hath said in his heart: I will not be moved from generation unto generation without evil. Whose mouth is full of cursing, and bitterness, and guile: under his tongue labour and sorrow. He sitteth in wait with the rich in secret places, to kill the innocent. His eyes look upon the poor: he lieth in wait in secret, as a lion in his den. He lieth in wait to take the poor man violently: violently to take the poor man whiles he draweth him. In his snare he will humble himself and shall fall when he shall have dominion over the poor. For he hath said in his heart: God hath forgotten, he hath turned away his face not to see for ever. Arise Lord God, let they hand be exalted: forget not the poor. Wherefore hath the impious provoked God? for he hath said in his heart: He will not enquire. Thou seest, that thou considerest labour and sorrow: that thou mayest deliver them into thy hands. To thee is the poor left: to the orphan thou will be an helper. Break the arm of the sinner and malignant: his sin shall be sought, and shall not be found. Our Lord shall reign for ever, and for ever and ever: ye Gentiles shall perish from his land. Our Lord hath heard the desire of the poor: thy ear hath heard the preparation of their heart. To judge for the pupil and the humble, that man add no more to magnify himself upon the earth.

Psalm 10

Unto the end the Psalm of David.

I trust in our Lord, how say ye to my soul: Pass over unto the mountain as a sparrow? For behold sinners have bent the bow, they have prepared their arrows in the quiver, that they may shoot in the dark at them that be right of heart. For they have destroyed the things which thou didst perfect: but the just what hath he done? Our Lord is in his holy temple, our Lord his seat is in heaven. His eyes have respect unto the poor: his eye-lids examine the sons of men. Our Lord examineth the just and the impious: but he that loveth iniquity hateth his own soul. He shall rain snares upon sinners: fire and brimstone, and blast of storms the portion of their cup. Because our Lord is just and hath loved justice: his countenance hath seen equity.

Psalm 11

Unto the end for the octave, the Psalm of David.

Save me Lord, because the holy hath failed because verities are diminished from among the children of men. They have spoken vain things every one to his neighbour, deceitful lips they have spoken in heart and heart. Our Lord destroy all deceitful lips, and the tongue that speaketh great things which have said: We will magnify our tongue, our lips are of us, who is our Lord? For the misery of the needy, and mourning of the poor, now will I arise, saith our Lord: I will put in a salvation I will do confidently in him. Words of our Lord be chaste words, silver examined by fire, tried from the earth, purged seven fold. Thou Lord will preserve us and keep us from this generation for ever. The impious walk round about: according to thy highness thou hast multiplied the children of men.

Psalm 12

Unto the end, the Psalm of David.

How long, O Lord wilt thou forget me unto the end? How long doest thou turn away thy face from me? How long shall I put counsels in my soul, sorrow in my heart by day? How long shall mine enemies be exalted over me? Regard and hear me, O Lord my God. Illuminate mine eyes that I sleep not in death at any time: lest sometime mine enemy say: I have prevailed against him. They that trouble me will rejoice if I be moved: but I have hoped in thy mercy. My heart shall rejoice in thy salvation: I will sing to our Lord which giveth me good things: and I will sing to the name of our Lord most high.

Psalm 13

Unto the end, a Psalm of David.

The fool hath said in his heart: There is no God. They are corrupt and are become abominable in their studies: there is not that doth good, no not one. Our Lord hath looked forth from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there be that understandeth and seeketh after God. All have declined, they are become unprofitable together: there is not that doth good, no not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre, with their tongues they did deceitfully, the poison of asps under their lips. Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: their feet swift to shed blood. Destruction and infelicity in their ways, and the way of peace they have not known: there is no fear of God before their eyes. Shall not all they know that work iniquity that devour my people as food of bread? They have not invocated our Lord, there have they trembled for fear where no fear was. Because our Lord is in the just generation you have confounded the counsel of the poor man because our Lord is his hope. Who will give from Sion the salvation of Israel? when our Lord shall have turned away the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice and Israel shall be glad.

Psalm 14

The Psalm of David.

Lord who shall dwell in thy tabernacle? Or who shall rest in thy holy hill? He that walketh without spot and worketh justice. He that speaketh truth in his heart, that hath not done guile in his tongue. Nor hath done evil to his neighbour, and hath not taken reproach against his neighbour. The malignant is brought to nothing in his sight: but them that fear our Lord he glorifieth, He that sweareth to his neighbour and deceiveth not, that hath not given his money to usury, and hath not taken gifts upon the innocent, He that doth these things shall not be moved for ever.

Psalm 15

The inscription of the title to David himself.

Preserve me, O Lord, because I have hoped in thee. I have said to our Lord: Thou art my God because thou needest not my goods. To the Saints that are in his land he hath made all my wills marvellous in them. Their infirmities were multiplied: afterward they made haste. I will not assemble their conventicles of blood: neither will I be mindful of their names by my lips. Our Lord the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou art he that will restore mine inheritance unto me. Cords are fallen to me in goodly places: for mine inheritance is goodly unto me. I will bless our Lord who hath given me understanding: moreover also even til night my veins have rebuked me. I foresaw our Lord in my sight always: because he is at my right hand that I be not moved. For this thing my heart hath been glad, and my tongue hath rejoiced: moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope. Because thou will not leave my soul in hell: neither wilt give thy holy one to see corruption. Thou hast made the ways of life known to me, thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance: delectations on thy right hand even to the end.

Psalm 16

The Prayer of David.

Hear, O Lord, my justice: attend my petition. With thine ears hear my prayer, not in deceitful lips. From thy countenance let my judgement proceed: let thine eyes see equities. Thou hast proved my heart and visited it by night: by fire thou hast examined me and there is no iniquity found in me. That my mouth speak not the works of men; for the words of thy lips I have kept the hard ways. Perfect my paces in thy paths, that my steps be not moved. I have cried, because thou hast heard me, O God: incline thine ear to me and hear my words. Make they mercies marvellous, which savest them that hope in thee. From them that resist thy right hand keep me, as the apple of the eye. Under the shadow of thy wings protect me: from the face of the impious that have afflicted me. Mine enemies have compassed my soul, they have shut up their fat: their mouth hath spoken pride. Casting me forth now have they compassed me: they have set their eyes to bend them unto the earth. They have taken me as a lion ready to the prey: and as a lion’s whelp dwelling in hid places. Arise Lord, prevent him, and supplant him: deliver my soul from the impious, thy sword from the enemies of thy hand. Lord from a few out of the land divide them in their life: their belly is filled of thy secrets. They are filled with children: and they have left their remnants to their little ones. But I in justice shall appear to thy sight: I shall be filled when thy glory shall appear?

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. 3., with bows.

Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, cleanse us from our sins. O Master, forgive our iniquities. O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for Thy name’s sake.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Penitential Troparia

Hasten to me with thy paternal embrace. Though I have lived in sinfulness throughout my life, O Saviour, I look to the inexhaustible bounty of thy mercies. Do not ignore my poor heart as I cry out to Thee with compunction: O Father, I have sinned against heaven and Thee!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

In mine actions I strove to emulate the prodigal but could never achieve his repentance. Bring me back, O Lord most kind, though I wilfully went astray, and cleanse me from my sins through the intercession of the Mother of God as I cry out to Thee: O Father, I have sinned against heaven and Thee!

Now and ever, and unto the ages of ages, Amen.

O Virgin Mother of God, receive the prayer of thy servants. Save us from all danger, O thou who gavest birth to Christ, the Saviour and Redeemer of our souls.

Lord, have mercy. 40.

O Lord Jesus Christ, our God and our Saviour, grant me perfect repentance and sorrow of heart in order that I may seek good things with all my spirit. I dread no one else but Thee.

Grant me Thy benevolent kindness, O Good One. May thy Father renew in me the likeness of thine image. He it was Who from His bosom brought Thee forth from all eternity. With Him Thou art eternal.

Though I had forsaken Thee, do Thou not abandon me. Though I had strayed from Thee, go out in search of me and bring me back to thy pasture. Number me among the chosen sheep of thy flock. Feed me as Thou dost them with the nourishment of thy life-giving sacraments. Pure hearts are thy dwelling place. Clearly in them is thy light revealed, the light Thou didst prepare for those who laboured for Thee through various difficulties. May we, too, be deemed worthy to receive it through thy gracious loving kindness that we may render glory to Thee together with thine unoriginate Father, and thine all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever. Amen.
