The Psalter of David

First Kathisma

Psalm 1

Blessed is the man who hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the chair of pestilence: But his will is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he shall meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree which is planted near the running waters, which shall bring forth its fruit, in due season. And his leaf shall not fall off: and all whatsoever he shall do shall prosper. Not so the wicked, not so: but like the dust, which the wind driveth from the face of the earth. Therefore the wicked shall not rise again in judgment: nor sinners in the council of the just. For the Lord knoweth the way of the just: and the way of the wicked shall perish.

Jáko vést Gospód pút právednych, i pút nečestívych pogíbnet.

Psalm 2

Why have the Gentiles raged, and the people devised vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes met together, against the Lord, and against his Christ. Let us break their bonds asunder: and let us cast away their yoke from us. He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh at them: and the Lord shall deride them. Then shall he speak to them in his anger, and trouble them in his rage. But I am appointed king by him over Sion, his holy mountain, preaching his commandment. The Lord hath said to me: Thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I will give thee the Gentiles for thy inheritance, and the utmost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron, and shalt break them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. And now, O ye kings, understand: receive instruction, you that judge the earth. Serve ye the Lord with fear: and rejoice unto him with trembling. Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord be angry, and you perish from the just way. When his wrath shall be kindled in a short time, blessed are all they that trust in him.

Vskúju šatášasja jazýcy, i ljúdije poučíšasja tščétnym? Predstáša cárije zémstii, i knjázi sobrášasja vkúpe ná Góspoda i na Christà Jegò. Rastórgnem úzy ích i otvéržem ot nás ígo ích. Živýi ná Nebeséch posmejétsja ím, i Gospód porugájetsja ím. Togdà vozglagólet k ním gnévom svoím i járostiju Svojéju smutít jà. Az že postávlen jésm Car ot Negò nad Siónom, goróju svjatóju jegò, vozveščája povelénije Gospódne. Gospód rečè ko Mnè: Syn Mój jesì Tỳ, Az dnés rodích Tjà. Prosì ot Menè, i dám Tì jazýki dostojánije Tvojè, i oderžánije Tvojè koncỳ zemlì. Upaséši jà páliceju želéznoju, jáko sosúdy skudélniča sokrušíši jà. I nýne, cárije, razuméjte, nakažítesja vsì sudjáščii zemlì. Rabótajte Góspodevi só strachom i rádujtesja Jemù s trépetom. Priiméte nakazánije, da nekogdà prognévajetsja Gospód i pogíbnete ot putì právednago, jegdà vozgorítsja vskóre járost Jegò. Blažéni vsì nadéjuščiisja Nán.

Psalm 3

The Psalm of David when he fled from the face of Absalom his son.
Psalom Davidu Vnegda otbegaše ot lica Avessaloma Syna svojego.

Why, O Lord, are they multiplied that afflict me? many are they who rise up against me. Many say to my soul: There is no salvation for him in his God. But thou, O Lord, art my protector, my glory, and the lifter up of my head. I have cried to the Lord with my voice: and he hath heard me from his holy hill. I have slept and taken my rest: and I have risen up, because the Lord hath protected me. I will not fear thousands of the people surrounding me: arise, O Lord; save me, O my God. For thou hast struck all them who are my adversaries without cause: thou hast broken the teeth of sinners. Salvation is of the Lord: and thy blessing is upon thy people.

Góspodi, čtosja umnóžiša stužájuščii mì? Mnózi vostajút na mjà, mnózi glagóljut dušì mojéj: nést spasénija jemù ó Bóze jegò. Tý že, Góspodi, Zastúpnik mój jesì, sláva mojà i voznosjà glavù mojù. Glásom moím kó Gospodu vozzvách, i uslýša mjà ot gorỳ svjatýja Svojejà. Az usnúch, i spách, vostách, jáko Gospód zastúpit mjà. Gospódne jést spasénije, i ná ljudech Tvoích blagoslovénije Tvojè.

Psalm 4

Unto the end in songs, the Psalm of David.
V konec, v pesnech psalom Davida.

When I called upon him, the God of my justice heard me: when I was in distress, thou hast enlarged me. Have mercy on me: and hear my prayer. O ye sons of men, how long will you be dull of heart? why do you love vanity, and seek after lying? Know ye also that the Lord hath made his holy one wonderful: the Lord will hear me when I shall cry unto him. Be ye angry, and sin not: the things you say in your hearts, be sorry for them upon your beds. Offer up the sacrifice of justice, and trust in the Lord: many say, Who sheweth us good things? The light of thy countenance, O Lord, is signed upon us: thou hast given gladness in my heart. By the fruit of their corn, their wine, and oil, they are multiplied. In peace in the self same I will sleep, and I will rest: For thou, O Lord, singularly hast settled me in hope.

Vnegdà vozzvách, uslýša mja Bóže právdy mojejà, v skórbi razprostraníl mja jesì, uščédri mjà i uslýši molítvu mojù. Sýnove čelovéčestii, dokóle tjažkosérdii? Vskúju ljúbite sújetnaja i íščete lžì? I uvédite, jáko udivì Gospód prepodóbnago Svojegò: Gospód uslýšit mjà, vnegdà vzovù k Nemù. Požríte žértvu právde i upovájte ná Gospoda. Mnózi glagóljut: ktò javít nám blagája? Známenasja na nás svét licà Tvojegò, Góspodi. Dál jesì vesélije v sérdcy mojém: ot plodà pšenícy, vinà i jeléja svojegò umnóžišasja. V míre vkúpe usnù i počíju, jáko Tỳ, Góspodi, jedínago na upovánije vselíl mjà jesì.

Psalm 5

Unto the end, for her that obtaineth the inheritance, the Psalm of David.
V KONEC, O nasledstvujuščem, psalom Davidu.

Give ear, O Lord, to my words, understand my cry. Hearken to the voice of my prayer, O my King and my God. For to thee will I pray: O Lord, in the morning thou shalt hear my voice. In the morning I will stand before thee, and I will see: because thou art not a God that willest iniquity. Neither shall the wicked dwell near thee: nor shall the unjust abide before thy eyes. Thou hatest all the workers of iniquity: thou wilt destroy all that speak a lie. The bloody and the deceitful man the Lord will abhor. But as for me in the multitude of thy mercy, I will come into thy house; I will worship towards thy holy temple, in thy fear. Conduct me, O Lord, in thy justice: because of my enemies, direct my way in thy sight. For there is no truth in their mouth; their heart is vain. Their throat is an open sepulchre: they dealt deceitfully with their tongues: judge them, O God. Let them fall from their devices: according to the multitude of their wickedness cast them out: for they have provoked thee, O Lord. But let all them be glad that hope in thee: they shall rejoice for ever, and thou shalt dwell in them. And all they that love thy name shall glory in thee. For thou wilt bless the just. O Lord, thou hast crowned us, as with a shield of thy good will.

Glagóly mojà vnušì, Góspodi, razuméj zvánije mojè. Vonmì glás molítvy mojejà, Cárju mój i Bóže mój, jáko k Tebè pomoljúsja, Góspodi. Zaútra uslýši glás mój, zaútra predstánu Tì, i úzriši mjà. Jáko Bog ne chotjái bezzakónije, Tỳ jesì: ne priídet k Tebè lukávnujai, ni prebúdut že zakonoprestúpnicy, pred očíma Tvoíma: voznenavídel jesì vsjà tvorjáščija bezzakónije. Pogubíši vsjà glagóljuščija lžù: múža króvi i lstíva gnušájetsja Gospód. Az že mnóžestvom mílosti Tvojejá, vnídu v dóm Tvój, poklonjúsja ko cérkvi svjatéj Tvojéj, v stráse Tvojém. Góspodi, nastávi mja právdoju Tvojéju, vrag moích rádi isprávi pred Sobóju pút mój. Jáko nést vo ustéch ích ístiny, sérdce ích sújetno, grób otvérst gortán ích: jazýki svoími lščáchu. Sudì ím, Bóže, da otpadút ot mýslej svoích, po mnóžestvu nečéstija ích izríni jà, jáko prognévaša Tjà, Góspodi. I vozveseljátsja vsì upovájuščii na Tjà, vó veki vozrádujutsja, i vselíšisja v ních i pochváljatsja o Tebè ljúbjaščii ímja Tvojè. Jáko Tỳ blagoslovíši právednika, Góspodi: jáko orúžijem blagovolénija venčál jesì nás.

Psalm 6

Unto the end in songs, the Psalm of David for the Octave.
V konec, v pesnjach o osmom, psalom Davidu.

O Lord, rebuke me not in thy indignation, nor chastise me in thy wrath. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak: heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled. And my soul is troubled exceedingly: but thou, O Lord, how long? Turn to me, O Lord, and deliver my soul: O save me for thy mercy’s sake. For there is no one in death, that is mindful of thee: and who shall confess to thee in hell? I have laboured in my groanings, every night I will wash my bed: I will water my couch with my tears. My eye is troubled through indignation: I have grown old amongst all my enemies. Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity: for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping. The Lord hath heard my supplication: the Lord hath received my prayer. Let all my enemies be ashamed, and be very much troubled: let them be turned back, and be ashamed very speedily.

I dúša mojà smutísja zelò: i Tỳ, Góspodi, dokóle? Obratì, Góspodi, izmì dúšu mojù: spasí mja rádi mílosti Tvojejà. Jáko nést v smérti pominájaj Tebè: vo áde že ktò ispovésttisja. Utrudíchsja vozdychánijem moím, izmýju na vsjáku nóšč lóže mojè, slezámi moími postélju mojù omočù. Smutísja ot járosti óko mojè, obetšách vo vséch vrazéch moích. Otstupíte ot menè, vsì tvorjáščii bezzakónije, jáko uslýša Gospód glás pláča moegò: uslýša Gospód molénije mojè, Gospód molítvu mojù priját. Da postydjátsja i smjatútsja vsì vrazì moì, vozvratjátsja i ustydjátsja zelò vskóre.

Psalm 7

The Psalm of David which he sang to our Lord, for the words of Chusi the son of Jemini.
Psalom Davidu, jegože vospet Gospodevi o slovesech Chusijevych, Syna Iemeniina.

O Lord, my God, in thee have I put my trust; save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me. Lest at any time he seize upon my soul like a lion, while there is no one to redeem me, nor to save. O Lord, my God, if I have done this thing, if there be iniquity in my hands: If I have rendered to them that repaid me evils, let me deservedly fall empty before my enemies. Let the enemy pursue my soul, and take it, and tread down my life, on the earth, and bring down my glory to the dust. Rise up, O Lord, in thy anger: and be thou exalted in the borders of my enemies. And arise, O Lord, my God, in the precept which thou hast commanded: and a congregation of people shall surround thee. And for their sakes return thou on high. The Lord judgeth the people. Judge me, O Lord, according to my justice, and according to my innocence in me. The wickedness of sinners shall be brought to nought; and thou shalt direct the just: the searcher of hearts and reins is God. Just is my help from the Lord; who saveth the upright of heart. God is a just judge, strong and patient: is he angry every day? Except you will be converted, he will brandish his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready. And in it he hath prepared the instruments of death, he hath made ready his arrows for them that burn. Behold he hath been in labour with injustice: he hath conceived sorrow, and brought forth iniquity. He hath opened a pit and dug it; and he is fallen into the hole he made. His sorrow shall be turned on his own head: and his iniquity shall come down upon his crown. I will give glory to the Lord according to his justice: and will sing to the name of the Lord the most high.

Góspodi Bóže mój, na Tjà upovách, spasí mja ot vséch gonjáščich mjà i izbávi mjà: da nekogdà pochítit jáko lév dúšu mojù, ne súšču izbavljájušču, nižè spasájušču. Góspodi Bóže mój, ášče sotvorích sè, ášče jést ne právda v rukù mojéju, ášče vozdách vozdajúščim mì zlà, da otpadù úbo ot vrag moích tóšč. Da poženét úbo vrág dúšu mojù i postígnet, i poperét v zemlì živót mój, i slávu mojù v pérst vselít. Voskresnì, Góspodi, gnévom Tvoím, voznesísja v koncých vrág Tvoích, i vostáni, Góspodi Bóže mój, povelénijem, ímže zapovéda. I v ném ugotóva sosúdy smértnyja, strély Svojà s gorjáščimi sodéla.

Psalm 8

Unto the end for presses, the Psalm of David.
V konec, o točilech, psalom Davidu.

O Lord, our Lord, how admirable is thy name in the whole earth for thy magnificence is elevated above the heavens. Out of the mouth of infants and of sucklings thou hast perfected praise, because of thy enemies, that thou mayst destroy the enemy and the avenger. For I will behold thy heavens, the works of thy fingers: the moon and the stars which thou hast founded. What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou hast made him a little less than the angels, thou hast crowned him with glory and honour: and hast set him over the works of thy hands. Thou hast subjected all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen: moreover, the beasts also of the fields. The birds of the air, and the fishes of the sea, that pass through the paths of the sea. O Lord, our Lord, how admirable is thy name in the whole world!

Góspodi, Gospód náš, jáko čúdno ímja Tvojè po vséj zemlì, jáko vzjátsja velelépota Tvojà prevýše nebés. Izo úst mladénec i ssúščich sveršíl jesì chvalù, vrág Tvoích rádi, razrušíši vragà i méstnika. Jáko uzrjù nebesà, déla pérst Tvoích, lunù i zvézdy, jáže Tỳ osnovà. Čtò jést čelovék, jáko pómniši ì? ilì syn čelovéč, jáko poseščáješi ì? Umálil jesì jegò málym čím ot ángel, slávoju i čéstiju venčál jesì jegò. I postávil jesì jegò nad dély rúku Tvojéju, vsjà pokoríl jesì pod nóze jegò. Ovcà i volỳ vsjà, ješčéže i skóty polskíja, ptícy nebésnyja, rýby morskíja, prechodjáščija stezjà morskíja. Góspodi, Gospód náš, jáko čúdno ímja Tvojè po vséj zemlì.

Čestnéjšuju cheruvím i slávnejšuju voístinu serafím, bez istlénija Bóga Slóva róždšuju, súščuju Bogoródicu, tja veličáem. Prostration.

Final Prayer

O righteous God, praiseworthy and all-sovereign! Great and mighty God! O God eternal! Give ear to Thy sinful servant, O God, and hear me at this time! Thou fully knowest my debasement, Lord, hear me. I entreat Thee, as Thou once didst hear Thy prophet Elias. Through his intercession wipe away mine iniquity and cleanse me of my sin.

Bože, vsederžitelju pravednyj i vsechvalnyj, Bože velikij i krepkij, Bože predvečnyj, uslyši mja grešnago raba tvojego, v čas sej uslyši mja Bože, i vsegda poslušaj mojego uničiženija, uslyši mja Gospodi moljaščagosja Tebe jakože inogda uslyšal jesi Tvojego Proroka Iliju, i molitvami togo popali vsja moja bezzakonija, i grechi očisti.

O holy God, Creator of the hosts of angels, Thou hast said: “Ask and ye shall receive.” Do not, therefore, be appalled by me who am so laden with sins as I utter prayers with lips defiled, for Thou didst promise to listen to those who sincerely turn to Thee in prayer. Guide my steps along a peaceful path, and pardon all my voluntary and involuntary sins.

Bože svjatyj, bezplotnych Sil Tvorče, rekij: “Prosite i prijmite,” ne gnušajsja mene grechami oderžimago, i ustnami nečistymi molitvu tvorjaščago. Jej Gospodi obeščavyjsja uslyšati istinno prizyvajuščich tja: napravi stopy moja na put miren, i ostavi mi vsja pregrešenija moja, volnaja i nevolnaja.

Thou didst say, “Be ye therefore simple as doves,” and so, with all my heart I cry out: “Hear me, O Hope of all the ends of the earth and those afar at sea! Rebuke the unclean spirits, for I am a coward. Take up arms and Thy shield and come to my defense. Draw Thy sword and wield it against my persecutors. To my soul, say: I am thy salvation.

Rekij: “Budite cely jako golubi,” vozzvach vsem serdcem moim, uslyši mja, upovanije vsem koncem zemli i suščym na mori daleče, zapreti nečistym duchom ot lica nemošči mojeja, vozmi oružije i ščit, i stani v pomošč mne, izvleci oružije i zavri soprotiv gonjaščim mja. Rci dúši mojej: Spasenije tvoje jesm az.

May the spirit of pride, hate, and envy leave my frail humanity, and the spirit of fright, despair, and iniquity as well. May all concupiscence of flesh inspired by the devil be suppressed in me. May my soul and body, spirit and mind, be illumined by Thy light. May thy mercy abide in me with abundant grace through the intercession of our most holy Lady, the Mother of God, and all thy saints, in order that I may glorify Thy most holy name, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever. Amen.

Da otstupit ot mojej nemošči dúch gordyni, i nenavisti, i zavisti, duch stracha i otčajanija, bujesti i vsjakija zloby. Da ugasnet v mne vsjakoje raždeženije, i podvizanije ploti mojeja ot diavolskich dejanij vostajušče. Da prosvetítsja duša i telo, duch že i razum moj svetom tvoim: množestvom že ščedrot tvoich da obitajet v mne milost tvoja, molitvami presvjatyja Vladyčicy našeja, Bogorodicy, i vsech svjatych tvoich: jako da proslavlju imja tvoje presvjatoje, Otca, i Syna, i Svjatago Ducha, nyne i prisno, i vo veki vekom. Amin.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Svyatýi Bóže, Svyatýi Krépkii, Svyatýi Bezsmértnyi, pomíluj nas. (3, with bows).

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Otče náš, Iže jesì ná nebesech. Da svjatítsja ímja Tvojè. Da priídet carstvije Tvojè. Da búdet vólja Tvojà, jáko ná nebesi i na zemlì. Chleb naš nasúščnyi dažd nam dnes. I ostávi nam dólgi náša, jákože i my ostavljáem dolžnikóm nášim. I ne vvedì nas vo iskušénije, no izbávi nas ot lukávago.
