The Psalter of David
Twentieth Kathisma
Psalm 143
A Psalm of David, Against Goliath.
Blessed be the Lord my God, who teacheth my hands to fight, and my fingers to war. My mercy, and my refuge: my support, and my deliverer: My protector, and I have hoped in him: who subdueth my people under me. Lord, what is man, that thou art made known to him? or the son of man, that thou makest account of him? Man is like to vanity: his days pass away like a shadow. Lord, bow down thy heavens and descend: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke. Send forth lightning, and thou shalt scatter them: shoot out thy arrows, and thou shalt trouble them. Put forth thy hand from on high, take me out, and deliver me from many waters: from the hand of strange children: whose mouth hath spoken vanity: and their right hand is the right hand of iniquity. To thee, O God, I will sing a new canticle: on the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings I will sing praises to thee. Who givest salvation to kings: who hast redeemed thy servant David from the malicious sword: deliver me, And rescue me out of the hand of strange children; whose mouth hath spoken vanity: and their right hand is the right hand of iniquity: whose sons are as new plants in their youth: Their daughters decked out, adorned round about after the similitude of a temple: their storehouses full, flowing out of this into that. Their sheep fruitful in young, abounding in their goings forth: their oxen fat. There is no breach of wall, nor passage, nor crying out in their streets. They have called the people happy, that hath these things: but happy is that people whose God is the Lord.
Psalm 144
Praising to David Himself.
I will extol thee, O God my king: and I will bless thy name for ever; yea, for ever and ever. Every day will I bless thee: and I will praise thy name for ever; yea, for ever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised: and of his greatness there is no end. Generation and generation shall praise thy works: and they shall declare thy power. They shall speak of the magnificence of the glory of thy holiness: and shall tell thy wondrous works. And they shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and shall declare thy greatness. They shall publish the memory of the abundance of thy sweetness: and shall rejoice in thy justice. The Lord is gracious and merciful: patient and plenteous in mercy. The Lord is sweet to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. Let all thy works, O Lord, praise thee: and let thy saints bless thee. They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom: and shall tell of thy power: to make thy might known to the sons of men: and the glory of the magnificence of thy kingdom. Thy kingdom is a kingdom of all ages: and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations. The Lord is faithful in all his words: and holy in all his works. The Lord lifteth up all that fall: and setteth up all that are cast down. The eyes of all hope in thee, O Lord: and thou givest them meat in due season. Thou openest thy hand, and fillest with blessing every living creature. The Lord is just in all his ways: and holy in all his works. The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him: to all that call upon him in truth. He will do the will of them that fear him: and he will hear their prayer, and save them. The Lord keepeth all them that love him; but all the wicked he will destroy. My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord: and let all flesh bless his holy name forever; yea, for ever and ever.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Now and ever, and unto the ages of ages, Amen.
Alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God. 3., with bows.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Now and ever, and unto the ages of ages, Amen.
Psalm 145
Alleluia of Aggaeus and Zachary.
Praise the Lord, O my soul, in my life I will praise the Lord: I will sing to my God as long as I shall be. Put not your trust in princes: In the children of men, in whom there is no salvation. His spirit shall go forth, and he shall return into his earth: in that day all their thoughts shall perish. Blessed is he who hath the God of Jacob for his helper, whose hope is in the Lord his God: Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all things that are in them. Who keepeth truth for ever: who executeth judgment for them that suffer wrong: who giveth food to the hungry. The Lord looseth them that are fettered: the Lord enlighteneth the blind. The Lord lifteth up them that are cast down: the Lord loveth the just. The Lord keepeth the strangers, he will support the fatherless and the widow: and the ways of sinners he will destroy. The Lord shall reign for ever: thy God, O Sion, unto generation and generation.
Psalm 146
Alleluia.
Praise ye the Lord, because psalm is good: to our God be joyful and comely praise. The Lord buildeth up Jerusalem: he will gather together the dispersed of Israel. Who healeth the broken of heart, and bindeth up their bruises. Who telleth the number of the stars: and calleth them all by their names. Great is our Lord, and great is his power: and of his wisdom there is no number. The Lord lifteth up the meek, and bringeth the wicked down even to the ground. Sing ye to the Lord with praise: sing to our God upon the harp. Who covereth the heaven with clouds, and prepareth rain for the earth. Who maketh grass to grow on the mountains, and herbs for the service of men. Who giveth to beasts their food: and to the young ravens that call upon him. He shall not delight in the strength of the horse: nor take pleasure in the legs of a man. The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him: and in them that hope in his mercy.
Psalm 147
Alleluia.
Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem: praise thy God, O Sion. Because he hath strengthened the bolts of thy gates, he hath blessed thy children within thee. Who hath placed peace in thy borders: and filleth thee with the fat of corn. Who sendeth forth his speech to the earth: his word runneth swiftly. Who giveth snow like wool: scattereth mists like ashes. He sendeth his crystal like morsels: who shall stand before the face of his cold? He shall send out his word, and shall melt them: his wind shall blow, and the waters shall run. Who declareth his word to Jacob: his justices and his judgments to Israel. He hath not done in like manner to every nation: and his judgments he hath not made manifest to them. Alleluia.
Psalm 148
Alleluia.
Praise ye the Lord from the heavens: praise ye him in the high places. Praise ye him, all his angels, praise ye him, all his hosts. Praise ye him, O sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars and light. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens: and let all the waters that are above the heavens praise the name of the Lord. For he spoke, and they were made: he commanded, and they were created. He hath established them for ever, and for ages of ages: he hath made a decree, and it shall not pass away. Praise the Lord from the earth, ye dragons, and all ye deeps: fire, hail, snow, ice, stormy winds, which fulfil his word: mountains and all hills, fruitful trees and all cedars: beasts and all cattle: serpents and feathered fowls: kings of the earth and all people: princes and all judges of the earth: young men and maidens: let the old with the younger, praise the name of the Lord: for his name alone is exalted. The praise of him is above heaven and earth: and he hath exalted the horn of his people. A hymn to all his saints to the children of Israel, a people approaching to him. Alleluia.
Psalm 149
Alleluia.
Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle: let his praise be in the church of the saints. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: and let the children of Sion be joyful in their king. Let them praise his name in choir: let them sing to him with the timbrel and the psaltery. For the Lord is well pleased with his people: and he will exalt the meek unto salvation. The saints shall rejoice in glory: they shall be joyful in their beds. The high praises of God shall be in their mouth: and two-edged swords in their hands: to execute vengeance upon the nations, chastisements among the people: to bind their kings with fetters, and their nobles with manacles of iron. To execute upon them the judgment that is written: this glory is to all his saints. Alleluia.
Psalm 150
Alleluia.
Praise ye the Lord in his holy places: praise ye him in the firmament of his power. Praise ye him for his mighty acts: praise ye him according to the multitude of his greatness. Praise him with the sound of trumpet: praise him with psaltery and harp. Praise him with timbrel and choir: praise him with strings and organs. Praise him on high sounding cymbals: praise him on cymbals of joy: let every spirit praise the Lord. Alleluia.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Now and ever, and unto the ages of ages, Amen.
Alleluia, alleluia, glory to Thee, O God. 3., with bows.
Psalm 151
This Psalm is Ascribed to David and is Outside the Number. When He Slew Goliath in Single Combat.
Little was I among my brethren: a younger brother in my father’s house. My hands, they made an instrument of music: my fingers, they prepared a psaltery. And who shall bring back tidings to my master? The Lord Himself, Himself gives ear. Himself sent forth His messenger: and took me from among my father’s sheep; and with the oil of His annointing He annointed me. Comely my brethren were and tall: And yet they found not favour with the Lord. But I, I sallied forth to meet the alien: and he reviled me by all his idols. But I drew forth the sword that was beside him: I cut his head off with it, and from the sons of Israel removed reproach.
Trisagion
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. 3., with bows.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. O Lord, cleanse us from our sins. O Master, forgive our iniquities. O Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for Thy name’s sake.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Penitential Troparia
Angels in heaven praise Thee, the King and Master, in song. I, too, like the publican fall down before Thee and cry out: Cleanse me, O God, and have mercy on me.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
My lawlessness can be compared to the billows of the sea, and my thoughts to the wind stirred up by contrary breezes. Am I to conclude my life and come to the city on high to behold the kingdom of Jerusalem? O Lord, bring peace to my soul and save me.
Now and ever, and unto the ages of ages, Amen.
As a fountain of mercy, O Theotokos, deem us worthy of mercy. Look upon thy people who have sinned and as always show thy power. We rely upon thee and cry out: Hail, as did once Gabriel the Archangel.
Lord, have mercy. 40.
O most merciful and gracious loving Lord Jesus Christ my God! Thou art the fountainhead of all goodness. Thou art its helper and perfecter. Thou hast said: Without me you can do nothing. And so, most holy Master, in my great sinfulness I cast my miserable soul before the throne of thy majestic splendour and most humbly fall at thy most pure feet, though I am but dust and ashes; with fear and trepidation I kiss them lovingly and give glory, honour, and thanks, for I am a sinful and unworthy man deemed worthy by thy grace to begin the recitation of the psalmody of praise and come to a loving conclusion.
Thou alone art without sin, O kindhearted Lord, my make and protector; if during any of the psalmody I sinned by empty talk or thoughts, pardon me and forgive me, thy creature, a person most sinful.
From minue unworthy lips, O most holy King, accept this fitting psalmody to the holy King as a pleasant sacrifice in the aroma of spiritual fragrance. May just one tear from mine eye, though it be the smallest, or a sigh from crush and humbled heart rise like incense before Thee.
Grant this I a sinful man may serve Thee, my Lord, in an acceptable manner all the days of my life and praise Thee in life immortal together with thine unoriginate Father and thine all-holy, good, and life-giving Spirit, through the intercession of thy most holy Mother, mine only hope and protection, and the patronage of thy renowned prophet David, the psalmist, and the prayers of the holy fathers and thy holy servants unto the ages of ages. Amen.
