Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ
6 August
Troparion, Tone 7.
Thou wast transfigured on the mountain, O Christ our God, showing Thy disciples Thy glory as far as they were able to bear it. Let Thine everlasting light shine also upon us sinners, through the prayers of the Mother of God. O Giver of light, glory to Thee.
Glory. Now and ever.
Kontakion, Tone 7.
On the mount wast Thou transfigured, and Thy disciples beheld Thy glory, O Christ our God, as far as they were able: that when they should see Thee crucified, they would know that Thy Passion was voluntary, and would preach to the world that Thou art truly the Brightness of the Father.
Prokeimenon, Tone 7.
Psalm 103:24, 1.
How great are Thy works, O Lord: Thou hast made all things in wisdom.
Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul: O Lord my God, Thou art exceedingly great.
The Lesson of the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Peter.
II Saint Peter §65 (1:10-19).
Brethren: Labour the more, that by good works you may make sure your calling and election. For doing these things, you shall not sin at any time. For so an entrance shall be ministered to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. For which cause I will begin to put you always in remembrance of these things: though indeed you know them, and are confirmed in the present truth. But I think it meet as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance. Being assured that the laying away of this my tabernacle is at hand, according as our Lord Jesus Christ also hath signified to me. And I will endeavour, that you frequently have after my decease, whereby you may keep a memory of these things. For we have not by following artificial fables, made known to you the power, and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ; but we were eyewitnesses of His greatness. For He received from God the Father, honour and glory: this voice coming down to Him from the excellent glory: This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him. And this voice we heard brought from heaven, when we were with Him in the holy mount. And we have the more firm prophetical word: whereunto you do well to attend, as to a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.
Alleluia, Tone 8.
Psalm 88:12, 16.
Alleluia.
Verse 1: Thine are the heavens, and thine is the earth. Alleluia.
Verse 2: Blessed is the people that knoweth jubilation. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
The Lesson of the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew.
Saint Matthew §70 (17:1-9).
At that time: Jesus taketh unto Him Peter and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart: and He was transfigured before them. And His face did shine as the sun: and His garments became white as snow. And behold there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking with Him. And Peter answering, said to Jesus: Lord, it is good for us to be here: if Thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. And as he was yet speaking, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them. And lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying: This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased: hear ye Him. And the disciples hearing, fell upon their face, and were very much afraid. And Jesus came and touched them: and said to them, Arise, and fear not. And they lifting up their eyes saw no one but only Jesus. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying: Tell the vision to no man, till the Son of man be risen from the dead.
In the place of “It is truly meet.”
Magnify, O my soul, the Lord Who was transfigured on Tabor!
Irmos: Thy birthgiving was shown to be incorrupt: God issued forth from thy womb, and appeared as a mortal being on earth, and dwelt with men. Wherefore, we all magnify thee, O Theotokos.
Communion.
Psalm 88:16, 17.
We shall walk, O Lord, in the light of Thy countenance: and in Thy name we shall rejoice all the day. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
