Second Thursday of Pascha
The Lesson of the Acts of the Holy Apostles.
Acts §12 (4:23-31).
In those days: The Apostles being let go, they came to their own company, and related all that the chief priests and ancients had said to them. Who having heard it, with one accord lifted up their voice to God, and said: “Lord, Thou art He that didst make heaven and earth, the sea, and all things that are in them. Who, by the Holy Ghost, by the mouth of our father David, Thy servant, hast said: ‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the people meditate vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes assembled together against the Lord and His Christ.’ For of a truth there assembled together in this city against Thy Holy Child Jesus, Whom Thou hast anointed, Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, to do what Thy hand and Thy counsel decreed to be done. And now, Lord, behold their threatenings, and grant unto Thy servants, that with all confidence they may speak Thy word, by stretching forth Thy hand to cures, and signs, and wonders to be done by the name of Thy Holy Son Jesus.” And when they had prayed, the place was moved wherein they were assembled; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spoke the word of God with confidence.
The Lesson of the Holy Gospel according to Saint John.
Saint John §16 (5:24-30).
The Lord said unto the Jews that came unto Him: “Amen, amen I say unto you, that he who heareth My word, and believeth Him that sent Me, hath life everlasting; and cometh not into judgment, but is passed from death to life. Amen, amen I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in Himself, so He hath given the Son also to have life in Himself: and He hath given Him power to do judgment, because He is the Son of man. Wonder not at this; for the hour cometh, wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God. And they that have done good things, shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment. I cannot of Myself do any thing. As I hear, so I judge: and My judgment is just; because I seek not My own will, but the will of Him that sent Me.”
