The Lesson of the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians.
II Corinthians §184 (7:10-16).
Brethren: The sorrow that is according to God worketh penance, steadfast unto salvation; but the sorrow of the world worketh death. For behold this selfsame thing, that you were made sorrowful according to God, how great carefulness it worketh in you; yea defence, yea indignation, yea fear, yea desire, yea zeal, yea revenge: in all things you have shewed yourselves to be undefiled in the matter. Wherefore although I wrote to you, it was not for his sake that I did the wrong, nor for him that suffered it; but to manifest our carefulness that we have for you before God: therefore we were comforted. But in our consolation, we did the more abundantly rejoice for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all. And if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I have not been put to shame; but as we have spoken all things to you in truth, so also our boasting that was made to Titus is found a truth. And his bowels are more abundantly towards you; remembering the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling you have received him. I rejoice that in all things I have confidence in you.

The Lesson of the Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark.
Saint Mark §9 (2:18-22).
At that time: The disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting; and they come and say to Jesus: Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast; but Thy disciples do not fast? And Jesus saith to them: Can the children of the marriage fast, as long as the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them; and then they shall fast in those days. No man seweth a piece of raw cloth to an old garment: otherwise the new piecing taketh away from the old, and there is made a greater rent. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: otherwise the wine will burst the bottles, and both the wine will be spilled, and the bottles will be lost. But new wine must be put into new bottles.
