The Lesson of the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Peter.
II Saint Peter §64 (1:1-10a).
Simon Peter, servant and Apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained equal faith with us in the justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ. Grace to you and peace be accomplished in the knowledge of God and of Christ Jesus our Lord: as all things of His divine power which appertain to life and godliness, are given us, through the knowledge of Him Who hath called us by His own proper glory and virtue. By Whom He hath given us most great and precious promises: that by these you may be made partakers of the divine nature: flying the corruption of that concupiscence which is in the world. And you, employing all care, minister in your faith, virtue; and in virtue, knowledge; and in knowledge, abstinence; and in abstinence, patience; and in patience, godliness; and in godliness, love of brotherhood; and in love of brotherhood, charity. For if these things be with you and abound, they will make you to be neither empty nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he that hath not these things with him, is blind, and groping, having forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore, brethren, labour the more, that by good works you may make sure your calling and election.
The Lesson of the Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark.
Saint Mark §58 (13:1-8).
At that time: As Jesus was going out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him: Master, behold what manner of stones and what buildings are here. And Jesus answering, said to him: Seest thou all these great buildings? There shall not be left a stone upon a stone, that shall not be thrown down. And as He sat on the mount of Olivet over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked Him apart: Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign when all these things shall begin to be fulfilled? And Jesus answering, began to say to them: Take heed lest any man deceive you. For many shall come in My name, saying, I am He; and they shall deceive many. And when you shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, fear ye not. For such things must needs be, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and famines. These things are the beginning of sorrows.
