Friday in the Thirtieth Week after Pentecost

The Lesson of the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Hebrews.
Hebrews §327 (11:8, 11-16).
Brethren: By faith he that is called Abraham, obeyed to go out into a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith also Sara herself, being barren, received strength to conceive seed, even past the time of age; because she believed that He was faithful Who had promised, for which cause there sprung even from one (and him as good as dead) as the stars of heaven in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. All these died according to faith, not having received the promises, but beholding them afar off, and saluting them, and confessing that they are pilgrims and strangers on the earth. For they that say these things, do signify that they seek a country. And truly if they had been mindful of that from whence they came out, they had doubtless time to return. But now they desire a better, that is to say, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He hath prepared for them a city.

The Lesson of the Holy Gospel according to Saint Mark.
Saint Mark §41 (9:32-40).
At that time: Jesus and His disciples came to Capharnaum. And when they were in the house, He asked them: What did you treat of in the way? But they held their peace, for in the way they had disputed among themselves, which of them should be the greatest. And sitting down, He called the twelve, and saith to them: If any man desire to be first, he shall be the last of all, and the minister of all. And taking a child, He set him in the midst of them. Whom when He had embraced, He saith to them: Whosoever shall receive one such child as this in My name, receiveth Me. And whosoever shall receive Me, receiveth not Me, but Him that sent Me. John answered Him, saying: Master, we saw one casting out devils in Thy name, who followeth not us, and we forbade him. But Jesus said: Do not forbid him. For there is no man that doth a miracle in My name, and can soon speak ill of Me. For he that is not against you, is for you. For whosoever shall give you to drink a cup of water in My name, because you belong to Christ: Amen I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.
