The Lesson of the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Philippians.
Philippians §239 (1:27-2:4).
Brethren: Let your conversation be worthy of the gospel of Christ: that, whether I come and see you, or, being absent, may hear of you, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind labouring together for the faith of the gospel. And in nothing be ye terrified by the adversaries: which to them is a cause of perdition, but to you of salvation, and this from God: for unto you it is given for Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for Him. Having the same conflict as that which you have seen in me, and now have heard of me. If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of charity, if any society of the spirit, if any bowels of commiseration: fulfill ye my joy, that you may be of one mind, having the same charity, being of one accord, agreeing in sentiment. Let nothing be done through contention, neither by vain glory: but in humility, let each esteem others better than themselves: each one not considering the things that are his own, but those that are other men’s.
The Lesson of the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke.
Saint Luke §24 (6:17-23a).
At that time: Jesus stood in a plain place, and the company of His disciples, and a very great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast both of Tyre and Sidon, who were come to hear Him, and to be healed of their diseases. And they that were troubled with unclean spirits, were cured. And all the multitude sought to touch Him, for virtue went out from Him, and healed all. And He, lifting up His eyes on His disciples, said: Blessed are ye poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for you shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for you shall laugh. Blessed shall you be when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake. Be glad in that day and rejoice; for behold, your reward is great in heaven.
